Commonwealth Digital Education Leadership Training in Action (C-DELTA) Programme in Sri Lankan Schools

What this site is about?

The Faculty of Education at the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), with the support from COL, has been implementing research projects to facilitate and promote the adoption of digital education environments in Sri Lankan schools. This was through developing capacity among school teachers to implement the C-DELTA programme in the secondary school level in Sri Lanka, and evaluate its impact on the teaching-learning process. It is envisaged that the participants of these projects will develop their competencies in adopting and promoting C-DELTA in their schools by improving their digital education leadership skills, thus becoming effective professionals who can cater to the digital education environments in their institution. This dynamic site features the key aspects of the research project, and captures the real life practitioner experiences and reflections, reported in the form of written and video ‘stories’. Our hope is that the adoption of C-DELTA will be continued in the Sri Lankan schools via these teachers functioning as “digital education leaders in action!”

What is C-DELTA?

Commonwealth Digital Education Leadership Training in Action (C-DELTA) is a programme of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to promote digital education environments in Commonwealth nations by assessing digital education competencies, developing learning materials around digital education skills, providing training opportunities for teachers, and monitoring student achievement and its relationship to livelihood. The C-DELTA programme provides a framework for fostering digital learning and developing skilled citizens for lifelong learning.

C-DELTA Journey at OUSL

Phase 1 of this project was very successfully implemented in 39 Sri Lankan schools representing the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, from July 2018 – March 2019.

Phase 2 of the project was implemented since December 2019 with 33 teachers from Sri Lankan schools, targeting to complete by July 2020. However, due to the unexpected COVID-19 global pandemic, smooth implementation of the project activities was hindered, and it was extended until April 2021. Amid various challenges and practical issues, the coordinating teachers made committed attempts to proceed with the project. While the adoption of C-DELTA by teachers and students has been slow, the pandemic situation itself has made both teachers and students realize the significance of improving digital literacy and related skills.

We have commenced Phase 3 of the project from February 2022.
